873 repairs, 51 inspections: RTA completes tunnel maintenance across Dubai Metro network
Advanced cleaning technologies extend service life and improve long-term system performance
DUBAI – The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed a significant programme of advanced maintenance and comprehensive rehabilitation works across the Dubai Metro tunnel network.
The initiative is part of the authority’s long-term strategy to enhance operational safety, ensure uninterrupted service continuity, and maintain high levels of efficiency and reliability across one of the region’s most critical transport systems. The works have been executed in line with internationally recognised rail sector standards and best practices.
The programme reflects a broader commitment to preserving vital infrastructure assets through proactive maintenance and engineering innovation. By integrating preventive and corrective approaches supported by advanced technologies, RTA aims to extend the operational life of tunnel infrastructure while ensuring the highest levels of readiness and safety for daily metro operations.
Inspection drive
Over the past year, RTA conducted 51 specialised tunnel inspections under carefully structured operational plans. These inspections were designed to monitor infrastructure integrity, identify early-stage technical issues, and ensure compliance with stringent safety requirements. The inspection process played a central role in maintaining system resilience across the underground network.

The detailed assessments resulted in the identification and resolution of 873 corrective maintenance tasks. These tasks were addressed with high efficiency standards, reflecting the authority’s focus on rapid intervention and precision-based engineering solutions. Performance indicators further highlighted operational excellence, with RTA achieving 100% of its preventive maintenance targets as well as 100% of its corrective maintenance objectives.
Maintenance works
The maintenance and rehabilitation framework includes a wide range of technical operations designed to sustain optimal tunnel performance. These include periodic inspections, specialised cleaning operations, rectification of operational defects, and replacement or upgrading of components that have reached the end of their service life.
The programme also incorporates continuous improvement projects aimed at enhancing long-term system efficiency. By addressing both immediate repair needs and future performance requirements, RTA ensures that Dubai Metro tunnels remain resilient under increasing operational demands. The integration of innovative engineering solutions further strengthens system reliability and reduces the likelihood of service disruption.
Focus on sustainability
A key component of the works involves comprehensive tunnel cleaning operations carried out using advanced techniques. These methods combine manual cleaning with high-pressure washing systems to effectively remove dust, debris and accumulated surface residues. This ensures that tunnel environments remain clean, safe and conducive to efficient metro operations.
RTA continues to align all maintenance activities with global rail industry standards, reinforcing Dubai’s position as a leader in modern urban transport infrastructure. The authority is also investing in continuous training and qualification programmes for specialised technical teams. These initiatives ensure staff remain equipped with the latest skills and knowledge required to manage advanced systems and emerging technologies.
Through this integrated approach, the tunnel maintenance programme not only enhances immediate operational performance but also strengthens long-term asset sustainability. The focus on efficiency, safety and technological advancement supports the ongoing evolution of Dubai Metro as a cornerstone of the city’s public transport network.
